Yes, it is legal to buy ammunition in California, but there are specific regulations that all buyers must follow. As of July 1, 2019, California law requires all ammunition purchases to go through a background check at the time of purchase. This means you must have a valid California Driver’s License or ID and pass a DOJ (Department of Justice) background check. Additionally, online purchases must be shipped to a licensed ammunition vendor.

No, unless you are a licensed ammunition vendor. California law prohibits individuals from reselling ammunition unless they hold a valid ammunition vendor license. If you need to transfer ammunition to someone else, it must go through a licensed dealer.

To purchase ammo in California, you must bring:

  • A valid California Driver’s License or Identification Card
  • Proof of residency (if required)
  • Your firearm registration (to speed up background checks)

 

If your ID says “Federal Limits Apply,” you’ll need to provide proof of U.S. citizenship, such as a passport or birth certificate.

Yes, most customers will need to pass a background check every time they purchase ammunition in California. However, there are three types of background checks:

  • Standard Eligibility Check ($1 fee, instant approval) – If you have a firearm registered in the CA DOJ system, you’ll typically be approved instantly.
  • Basic Eligibility Check ($19 fee, takes a few days) – If you don’t have a firearm registered, you may need to undergo a full eligibility check.
  • Certificate of Eligibility (COE) Holders – If you have a COE, you may bypass some checks depending on circumstances.

There is currently no legal limit on how much ammunition a California resident can purchase at one time. However, larger bulk purchases may trigger additional scrutiny during background checks.

Yes. An adult signature is required upon delivery for all ammunition shipments. Make sure someone 18 or older is available at the delivery address to sign for the package.
